Belltown In A Nutshell

Belltown is a true urban neighborhood that borders the northern edge of Downtown Seattle and the historic Pike Place Market. The neighborhood's luxury lofts and condominiums offer unequaled views of Elliott Bay, the Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains to the west. Belltown residents enjoy a walkable, vibrant environment with a mix of residential buildings, retail shops, and parks.

History

Belltown is named for landowner William Bell, and originally comprised the land hemmed in by Elliott Bay to the west and 1st Avenue to the east. After the regrade flattened Denny Hill in 1899, Belltown expanded eastward, and became a firmly working-class neighborhood of warehouses, hotels, and apartments. The area around 3rd & Virginia was known as "film row" in the early 1900s, home to film distributors and many ornate theaters. Rezoning in the 1970s allowed the high-rises we see today.

Points of Interest

Many people move to Belltown to enjoy urban living and attractions within walking distance from their condos. The Olympic Sculpture Park is a beautiful outdoor art installation, and the perfect setting to enjoy a sunset over the Puget Sound and the Olympics. Pike Place Market is nearby for fresh produce, beautiful flowers and local gifts and retail items. Belltown has an extensive list of cafes, restaurants and bars along 1st and 2nd Avenue, and the historic Moore Theater hosts live music.
