Fremont In A Nutshell

Fremont is one of Seattle's most unique neighborhoods, due to its self-designation as the "Center of the Universe" and its artistic spirit. Located between the north shore of Lake Union and Ballard, it is home to some of Seattle's best restaurants, as well as tech companies such as Adobe and Google. A mix of single-family homes, apartments, and condos around the thriving business district makes Fremont a dense but extremely livable neighborhood.

History

In 1888 developers widened a stream that is now the ship canal running through the neighborhood, and began building a railway system through the area, attracting early settlers to the neighborhood. By the mid 1900's, Fremont was a popular settled area. The railway and trolley systems ceased in the 1940's and a quiet period extended until the 60's when low rent lured students and artists to the area, whose quirky eclectic influences are still currently visible and expressed in Fremont .

Points of Interest

North 36th Street and Fremont Avenue North are the Fremont's main thoroughfares, where you'll find restaurants ranging from the exotic (Korean-fusion restaurant Joule), to the comfortable (dog-friendly Norm's Eatery & Alehouse), all with a healthy dose of classic Seattle coffee shops. Fremont is famous for its annual summer solstice festival and parade, usually featuring scantily clad bicyclists. Fremont Oktoberfest and the weekly Sunday farmers market are also big draws to the neighborhood.
