Georgetown In A Nutshell

Georgetown is Seattle's oldest residential neighborhood, and its location five miles from downtown Seattle in an industrial area of the city gives it a unique character. An abundance of Craftsman homes appeal to families, and a hip business district with coffee shops, restaurants, and other small businesses make it a popular neighborhood for young professionals, as well.

History

Georgetown is arguably the site of Seattle's first settlement, as Luther Collins, Henry Van Asselt, and the Maple family established permanent structures here in 1851, months before the famed Denny Party. Hops grew well in the area, and the original Rainier Brewery (once the 6th largest brewery in the world) started operations in 1882. Georgetown was an independent city from 1904-1910, largely as a way to ward off prohibition, and it remained a city watering hole during prohibition years.

Points of Interest

Perhaps owing to its status as a prohibition holdout and its brewing heritage, Georgetown is home to numerous breweries today, including Georgetown Brewing and Schooner Exact. An eclectic mix of businesses in an industrial setting, such as All City Coffee, Stellar Pizza, and several antique shops give Georgetown its unique personality. The neighborhood also hosts an array of festivals, including the Georgetown Carnival and Art Attack.
