Seattle Real Estate Spotlight: Green Lake

Green Lake is a neighborhood north of downtown that stretches around the northern and eastern edges of the lake of the same name. A growing business district is home to restaurants, coffee shops, and retailers selling everything you need for an active lifestyle. Classic Craftsman homes abound in Green Lake, and while the area surrounding the lake is a public park, many residences enjoy lake views. Green Lake's walking and cycling path is one of Seattle's most popular outdoor recreation areas.

History

David Phillips discovered Green Lake in the late summer of 1855. At that time of year, seasonal algae blooms were in full force, and the lake most likely appeared green to Phillips' surveyors. Settlers began trickling in, and land owners advertised parcels in what they predicted would be "Seattle's choicest suburb." Waterfront homes originally surrounded the lake, but the water level was lowered in 1911 to make room for what is now Green Lake Park.

Points of Interest

Green Lake is an exercise-lover's paradise. Jog, walk, or bike around the 2.8-mile path that surrounds the lake; rent a paddle boat or kayak; or play a few rounds at the nearby golf course. Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants with lake views, visit nearby Woodland Park Zoo, or catch a performance at the Bath House Theater. Nearby sports fields host many of the city's school and recreational sports leagues.
