Lake Union In A Nutshell

Several neighborhoods surround Lake Union - Eastlake, Fremont, South Lake Union, and the east slope of Queen Anne Hill. Residential options range from predominately condos and apartments to a selection of single-family homes, many with spectacular views of the lake and Downtown Serattle. South Lake Union has boomed in popularity as a residential destination in the past decade, thanks to the neighborhood's designation as a tech industry hub.

History

Lake Union received its name from Thomas Mercer, who chose the moniker because he believed it was only a matter of time before a canal would unite the lake with Puget Sound and Lake Washington (the Lake Washington Ship Canal would do this in 1934). South Lake Union was once home to primarily blue collar workers, and was a hub for timber and coal arriving by barge. Its industrial past has given way to today's tech industry.

Points of Interest

Lake union offers a variety of water activities such as paddle boarding, sailing lessons, and is home to the Center for Wooden Boats. The South Lake Union neighborhood has become a destination for dining and shopping thanks to rapid development over the past decade, and South Lake Union Park is a place for residents to retreat.
