Madrona In A Nutshell

Madrona is located on the shores of Lake Washington between the neighborhoods of Denny Blaine and Leschi. Madrona has a small commercial core centered at the corner of 34th Avenue and Union Street. Many homes boast views of Lake Washington, the Cascades, and Mt. Rainier, while others have peek-a-boo views of Downtown Seattle.

History

The area known as Madrona was first platted in 1889 as the Cascade Addition by realtors who had begun to explore the beach lands around the City of Seattle. Madrona was named by John Ayer after the Madrona (arbutus) trees that grow along the beach. In 1890, the Randell family was the first to settle in Madrona and make it their home. A park was built, and a private electric trolley line was developed along 34th & Union, then moved along Howell and on to Madrona Park.

Points of Interest

Madrona is a friendly residential neighborhood with a small-town feel, thanks to its quaint commercial district along 34th Avenue. Local boutiques and restaurants of note include Bottlehouse, Glassybaby, the Hi-Spot Café, St. Cloud’s, Red Cow, and Hitchcock boutique. Neighborhood parks include Madrona Park, featuring a swimming area on Lake Washsington and picnic shelters; and Madrona Playground, which offers a kids play area, tennis courts, and a shelter house that can be rented for parties.
