History
Originally inhabited by the Suquamish Tribe, the island was ceded to the U.S. government in 1855 and named for Commodore William Bainbridge. From the late 1800’s through the 1920’s, it served as a major milling and shipbuilding center. Fort Ward was a U.S. Navy outpost during WWII, and the island’s Japanese residents were some of the first to be sent to internment camps. Car ferry service to Seattle began in 1937, and the town of Winslow incorporated in 1947.

Bainbridge’s main business district is located near the ferry dock at Eagle Harbor, and offers a wide variety grocery shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, and local businesses. Residents here enjoy wineries, local arts, farms, hiking, sailing and kayaking in a beautiful setting. The Bainbridge Farmer’s Market is open from April through December, and the island’s many parks offer countless places to spend time outdoors. The Bainbridge ferry offers some of the best views of the Seattle skyline.
