Ballard is located northwest of downtown Seattle, bordered by the Puget Sound to the west, and is known for its roots in Nordic culture and the maritime industry. A lively downtown core and thriving restaurant scene have made Ballard a popular residential community, and while it is dominated by single-family homes, condominium living is becoming increasingly common.

History

Once its own city that was the 7th largest in Washington, Ballard was founded by Captain William R. Ballard in 1890. Scandinavian settlers, attracted by salmon-fishing opportunities, helped found Ballard’s fishing industry, which is still based in Ballard’s Salmon Bay. In order to take advantage of the City of Seattle’s drinking water supply and sewer system, Ballard was annexed to Seattle in 1907.

Points of Interest

Ballard residents and visitors love watching salmon swim up the fish ladder at Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, which were built in 1917. Ballard is home to Golden Gardens Park, which includes one of the few sandy beaches in Seattle. Historic Ballard Avenue hosts a vibrant mix of shops and restaurants, and the Nordic Heritage Museum keeps Scandinavian culture alive. Ballard Seafoodfest and the celebration of Norwegian Independence on May 17 are long-running Ballard traditions.
