History

Newcastle, as with neighboring Renton, was one of Washington state’s earliest coal-mining areas, and the coal mined there had a direct impact on the development of the Port of Seattle. Yet, Newcastle remained unincorporated until 1994, and now the area is popular with residents who work on the Eastside.
