Seattle Real Estate Spotlight: The Highlands

The Highlands is an exclusive, gated residential community perched above the Puget Sound in Shoreline, just outside the Seattle city limits. Homes are situated on large private lots on winding roads, and feature outstanding architecture and Sound and mountain views. The Highlands has been home to some of the biggest names in Seattle, including members of the Boeing, McCaw, and Nordstrom families.

History

The Highlands was developed by the OImsted Brothers in 1907 and originally featured just 50 tracts. Today the neighborhood is home to 112 lots, plus 66 acres of green space. Until recently, The Highlands was an unincorporated neighborhood, and all mail sent to residents simply needed a name followed by “The Highlands, Seattle.” Though now part of the City of Shoreline, the neighborhood maintains its own roads, landscaping, and water and sewer systems, all paid for by the homeowners’ association.

Points of Interest

The main attraction of life in The Highlands is serenity and security. The wealth of native trees and greenery offers a bucolic, quasi-rural environment, with the amenities of Shoreline and Seattle just minutes away. The Seattle Golf Club is popular with residents, and the Florence Henry Memorial Chapel has stood in The Highlands for more than 89 years, serving as a place of worship for people of all denominations, and a venue for concerts and other neighborhood events.
