History of Belltown
Named for landowner William Bell, it was originally comprised of the land hemmed in by Elliott Bay to the west and 1st Avenue to the east. After the regrade flattened Denny Hill in 1899, Belltown expanded eastward, and became a firmly working-class neighborhood of warehouses, hotels, and apartments. The area around 3rd & Virginia was known as “film row” in the early 1900s, home to film distributors and many ornate theaters. Rezoning in the 1970s allowed the high-rises we see today.
